I decided to make this thread because the one Kara made about diet & nutrition started to go off topic by also talking about exercise (partly my fault). It seems we need a thread that covers all grounds. The intention of this thread is to talk about every aspect of getting into shape, not just losing weight but becoming healthier, more fit, and just feeling better in general.
Seeing that the new year is upon us I know a lot of us have health related resolutions so you can use this thread to say what your goals are so we can help each other out. If you are a naysayer of the idea of new years resolutions then this isn't the place to talk about why you think they are stupid. I'd like this to be a productive discussion.
I'll start off by saying what my goals for this year are. I figure if I put them out in the open for people to see, I'll be more motivated to sticking to my plan so I don't look like a failure.
1. Fix all of my bad eating and exercise habits for the long term.
2. Not only return to my previous level of fitness but surpass it and keep going.
3. By the end of the year, feel healthy and more capable than I did at the beginning.
Notice I didn't make a "lose weight" resolution. That's because I'm not trying to lose a bunch of weight, just a lot of fat. I'd also like to gain some muscle. We all know that weighs more than fat. Nevertheless I should be a bit lighter if all goes well because I don't expect to gain muscle mass equal to the amount of fat I lose, as awesome as that would be.
My advice to everyone else is to not make a goal saying "lose X lbs." because constantly weighing yourself will seriously fuck with your head and discourage you when you don't meet your expectations. Not to mention, your weight isn't always reliable standard for health. Use the mirror as a guide instead of a scale. Your results will keep you more motivated to keep at it.
I've gone through this process before and it's not easy, but still not as hard as most people think as long as you have the right mindset and the know-how. What I did wrong last time is become overconfident. At my prime I thought my boosted metabolism meant I could start eating whatever I wanted and as much of it as I wanted and I'd stay the same. This also made me lazier and I stopped exercising like I use to. Slowly my metabolism has started to slow down and before I knew it I was a fatty yet again. I'm pretty sure that I learned my lesson so hopefully I don't repeat the same mistake.
TLDR; Post your health related goals for the year so you can stay motivated and get advice from others.
Oh and I found a really good article/page that covers all aspects of health and fitness pretty well for beginners, on 4chan believe it or not... ;D
Definitely worth a read through.
