So someone said yesterday that we don't really have any full time archers with Renell being out due tot health and Sirilay being unable to come out. Others are part timers....not wanting to say that we don't have any. Anywho, I've been wanting to arch since I got into the sport and now that I'm actually getting into the sport, yeah, I want to arch but I've always been told that you have to fight hand to hand combat for a while before you can arch, which as posed the problem of starting. So what really is required to be an archer....besides a bow, string, and arrows?

The year of fighting is just a personal preferance to get you used to all the rules and such. That and to get you started on building your own stuff because arrows last about as long a any sword and you need to know how to fix'em.

Not to mention, arrows are the hardest thing to make in Belegarth. Consider, you're taking something intended to be used to kill something (a hunting arrow) and making it safe to hit people. Sans a head, of course. A bare shaft can still kill a man.
Talk to Renell or Sirilay about arrows. They'd know more about making them safely, assessing problems, fixing, etc.

Random question....it's been a long time since I've seen an arrow be made....any dab involved? Actually, think the only time I've actually seen an arrow get made was the first trial run back in 06 and it was WRONG.

Random question....it's been a long time since I've seen an arrow be made....any dab involved? Actually, think the only time I've actually seen an arrow get made was the first trial run back in 06 and it was WRONG. I'm assuming that you mean DAP and it's been my experience that it adds a bit of weight to arrows. You want the arrows to be as light as possible to increase flight range and because a lighter arrows tends to hit lighter. I will use hot glue to secure the arrow can to the shaft and spray glue for the rest. I've tried Gorilla Glue but it dries really hard and doesn't flex like spray glue or hot glue. This means that the foam is far more likely to separate from the arrow shaft. Assuming you're using the Edhellen arrow kits, these are the instructions you should follow: edhellen.com/arrow_construction.htmUnless you have access to better foams and tech, I've found them to be the best way to make arrows as long as you follow the directions. To answer the original question, besides a bow, string, and arrows, I would add knowledge of the following: 1) Know and understand (not just read) all of the archery safety rules, in particular, the half-draw rule. I've seen too many archers panic when getting charged and immediately do a full draw shot at someone at under 15 feet. 2) Know how to make safe arrows. As Ironside said, you're taking something that's designed to hurt or kill and making it safe. It's a big responsibility. Here's an archery tutorial I put together a while back: board.belegarth.com/viewtopic.php?f=135&t=33117If you happen to see me at an event or practice, I'd be more than happy to give you some tips. Most likely at Octoberfest, I'll be giving a class on combat archery. Hope this helps. Kyrian
