I am building a strap shield with 1/2" plywood. I already have glued 3 layers of blue foam on the face of the shield. Are these enough layers or do I need to put a fourth one on? This is my first shield and I want to make sure I am doing it right. The instructions I am using say use three layers but I've seen a lot of people on the Dagorhir message board suggest using 4 layers. What do you suggest? Thanks.

Dag people can be sissies, three layers is fine. If you can wail someone with a chunk of fiberglass that only has three layers a sheet of plywood isn't going to be any different.

Three is fine. Some people use two and it's fine. Just make sure you have no less then three layers around.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with using four layers if you shield bash a lot or such like that...but there isn't a lot of use for it unless you just want some extra weight on your shield.
Also, my own shield question:
Is plywood the overall best core to use for a shield, or are there other cores just as or more suitable?

That sign board stuff Haste had was kinda cool but if someone wanted to be a dick they could easily fail it (magnet test). Tecply is the superior to plywood I guess, weight-wise. Special name for it is Underlaminant. I've been trying to sell my other loaner so I can make myself a new shield out of the stuff.

Techply is also significantly lighter, right? I've been wanting to make another tower since mine died, but I've been thinking on how to make it lighter.

You know, as I just remember Will has a shield made from the stuff and it's stupidly light.
Hurr hurr hurr.

I'm thinking of making a new shield using a plastic saucer sled that I picked up this year. What is the best way to attach the handles/staps to it? Should I ,(using gorrilla tape ), attachch it directly to the back or slice slots into the thing and tape them to the front before adding my foam?

I'm thinking of making a new shield using a plastic saucer sled that I picked up this year. What is the best way to attach the handles/staps to it? Should I ,(using gorrilla tape ), attachch it directly to the back or slice slots into the thing and tape them to the front before adding my foam? I'm not sure if you've seen my black and yellow dome shield but it's made with a plastic saucer. What I've found works are round head screws, lock nuts, washers, and metal mending plates: www.pronto.com/compare/hillman-fasteners-100pk-6-32x1-11501986234#www.moonup.com/mending-plate.htmlI use the two-hole rectangular mending plates for the handle and the four-hole rectangular ones for the forearm strap. I specifically use round head screws so that they sit flush with the washer and mending plate and they won't tear the foam. For straps, I'm using a leather dog collar for the handle and a piece of armor-grade leather as the forearm strap. If I did it again, I would figure out a way to make the forearm strap adjustable so that I could use it regardless of whether I have armor on or not. Use the mending plates as guides to mark the holes in the plastic. Take your time and don't rush. Get the straps exactly how you want them to be before you put the foam on the shield. You don't want to drill a bunch of holes in the sled and compromise its integrity. If the shield has handle cutouts, make sure your straps are not in-line with them or else you may end up hitting your elbow against it when your rotate your arm. My attachment points go from the face: screw--washer--mending plate--sled--mending plate--washer--locknut The metal plates distribute the stress across the surface and reduce the likelihood of the screws tearing through the plastic. Make sure you get screws that are the proper length. You don't want to have really long ends on your side of the shield or else you'll have to trim or cover them. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Didn't you write a tutorial on how to make those shields, Kyrian? I vaguely remember seeing it before.
Geezer, the shield Kyrian speaks of is really, really nice. I first heard of saucer shields at my first event, hanging out in Hydra camp. I don't remember who, but they showed me Kyrian's shield. So sexy, man.

Did you use just one saucer sled or did you double them up to keep them from folding?

Did you use just one saucer sled or did you double them up to keep them from folding? I lucked out and found one that was actually stiff enough on its own. However, pretty much all of the ones I've seen nowadays are thinner and doubling them up is probably the way to go.

Hey thanks a LOT. Thats really gonna help. I was gonna make 2 of them, but think I'll double it being my first attempt. The staps I have are a couple of "cloth" style belts that one of them has double rivited holes that go the entire lenghth, could make it adjustable.

Does it have to be all 3 types of foam? All I have is the blue foam.

This may be a little off topic, but Kyrian, is there anything about fighting you don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of? lol
