I just wanted to throw this out there.
First aid is just that, FIRST aid. It is the first aid given to a patient in order to stabilize them long enough for follow on care, i.e. paramedics or hospital. Stoping to help someone change their tire doesn't make you a mechanic. Knowing first aid doesn't make you Dougey Hauser or House, you will not be saving anyone's lives.

Oh but I wanted to meet House. LOL. Good point though. LOL, reminds me that the last person who tired to help me change a flat ended up puncturing the antifreeze hose of my car.
What does First Aid actually all cover though? Does the heimlich fall under that?

First Aid covers emergency medical procedures to immediately administer aid (CPR, Heimlick, Rescue Breathing, Nasal Pharangia, not sure if the second and fourth ones are spelled right...), but more often involves emergency action to stabilize a patient long enough for someone with more medical training to save them.
Think of a racing game. The doctor is the finish line, but you may run out of time before you get there (i.e. die). A person rendering first aid is like a check point. You don't finish the race at a check point, but they give you more time to get to the finish line.

I was planning on just pounding on the unconscious person's chest until I realize that my efforts are useless then at that point, dramatically rise my fists into the air and scream KHANN, but I like your ideas better.

Though medically unsound Brooder, your idea has merit. I give you karma for it. lol

i realize this is old....but i hope i can clear some things up for you all being that im not only a CNA but a Certified First Responder.
tim what your explaining is a First Responder. first aid is far different. first aid is like putting a band aid on a scrape or cut. what your explaining is the first responders job.
although many of you may not know, first responders are actually employed in some areas at fire departments. but it is insanly rare.
those procedures you explained arent exactly true...seriously people its called abdominal thrust now...the family Heimlick doesnt want to be invovled with that procedure because people still die.
anyway...abdominal thrust and nasal pharangials are illigal for most people to perform...most people being the ones that arent first responders (for the latter procedure) if your good to go and do first aid, and your caught placing a nasal pharangia thats an instant law suit, not only by the patient but also by the state. legaly your empersonating medical personel...and the prison time is HUGE not to mention bail.
to be honest if your not even certified in CPR/AED your not even suppose to perform those because you've not been properly trained. you can really fuck someones shit up...yes you will even if you are certified...but if you dont know where to place your hands or dont know how to work the mechine...your fucked and that person can sue you even though your doing a good deed.
please you guys...get certified before you plan on becoming medics....i dont want to be hearing about any of you going to court because of stupid shit like this...
also one more thing...tim...i'm not trying to sound mean...but most of what your explaining i'm going to guess is combat first aid and what your aloud to do...its not the same thing as the civilian versions...your guys got to do WAY more fun shit than most people...yeah that does sound kinda bitchy...
k hope that helps.

Exalted. Good way to put it, Creampuff.
This is exactly why I haven't tried anything for the medical teams at events. I know field/improvised first aid. I do plan to get certified for things before I even consider trying to get on board.
On that note, Red Cross offers Basic, Advanced, Infant and Wilderness Survival for their first aid courses. I think they're relatively cheap. Anyone interested in getting in on these with me?

Bah too much to read for Mae's first post right now. But seeing the last one....awesome. Let me nkow when it's offered and if there's a price. DeKalb discount perhaps? Haha, something good has to come from living in this hell hole. Oddly, Sycamore Community Center doesn't offer anything with CPR and what not. Yeah, we're lame like that.

that will likely work for any of those living in Sycamore/Dekalb area but most of the kids in Rockford would have to find ride to get to any class at Haish Gym and gas money to get there as well.

Yeah, that's what I meant. At our gym, Sycamore Park District residents pay a lower price than out of district people.
Well, if this would be after I move, I'd be willing to commute a few people down. Car fits threes comfy besides me...when it's clean.

most of the people in Rockford would not be able to afford out of district rates and the cost to commute to Dekalb for something like that. It would be far cheaper, easier, faster and simpler for them to check into American Red Cross or United Way classes for CPR/AED courses hear in Rockford area. Also, some of the hospitals occasionally do these classes as well. the cost is usually minimal. Why spend twice the money to go out of town when they can do it right here? that is just silly.

renell...if kara is willing to drive everyone, and she's going to that way anyway...its cool...i would even do that.
and dekalb's out of district people pay like $10 more...as far as im concerned, and the COUNTLESS cpr/aed classes i've gone through....that's pretty fuckin cheap!

Awesome that I'm in district then.....assuming. Mae, is College Ave in district. Sycamore's is really fucked up and has like half of streets that are in and like 3 addresses on a block that aren't in and weird shit like that.
If I'm driving round trip, I may need some gas money. one wouldn't be a problem but it would be a special trip to return people to Rockford. We'll have to see though. Or food, I do take food or other things for repay. Don't necessarily have to be money. If it's something that saves me money, it's all good.

You guys do what you want but often there are classes here in town for $25.00 total cost. I doubt they are going to get it cheaper than that if they are paying the $10.00 out of district cost and paying for gas, etc...

Too lazy to reread through all of the posts, but wasn't there once something said about some sort of first aid training or something that someone offered to do for those interested?
Watching Family Guy just now, where Louis chokes and Jerome "aids" her, reminded me that I've been wanting a refresher on all that. My niece almost choked yesterday. Luckily, she didn't and my mom was also there since she's had recent training, but yeah, I have no freaking clue how to do that kind of stuff on a toddler. Haven't had any training since the basic stuff in health class 10ish years ago. A refresher and update would be great.
If there is no one to teach this and anyone else is interested, my mom said that they're doing the full training through her work this fall, think in October. She works at a preschool...well actually it's a age 2 through the 6th private school, but she's in the preschool. It may cost some money, but you would be certified then.
Either way, if someone can teach or anyone is interested in learning, let me know.
